Science Department Vision and Goals

Students attending Moorestown Township Public Schools will be immersed in a coherent science curriculum that has been developed by our experienced faculty and based on the best practices in science education.  Our course curriculum expands the Next Generation Science Standards allowing our students to explore topics more completely using scientific and engineering practices. These goals will enable students to become deep thinkers, problem solvers and integral members of our community.

Specifically, after graduating from Moorestown, ours students will be able to:
  • think critically
  • ask appropriate questions
  • design solutions to problems
  • defend conclusions from evidence/data
  • design and test an experiment/product
  • make connections within the K-12 science curriculum and between science and other disciplines (Math, ELA, Fine & Industrial Arts, and the Humanities)
  • make scientific connections with their community and the larger world
  • learn from mistakes
  • persevere through failure
  • take appropriate risks

Students will experience The Moorestown Science Program through:
  • fun and creative lessons
  • hands-on laboratory experiences
  • real world phenomena and scenarios
  • the use of technology
  • cooperative learning
  • simulations and virtual labs
  • connections with real scientists
  • student centered discovery and exploration
  • STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Math) based lessons and activities

Science Courses and SAT Subject Area Testing

SAT Subject Test

Description of Test

MHS Course That Most Closely Aligns to the Test

Biology Ecological/Molecular

Planning to major in or focus on the sciences (e.g., pre-med, pharmacy, veterinary medicine) in college? By taking the Biology-E or Biology-M Subject Tests, you can indicate this interest as part of your application. The Biology Subject Test assesses your understanding of the major concepts of biology typically learned in high school and is an excellent way to showcase your achievements.

College Board Portal for SAT  Biology E/M

Biology Ecological (Biology-E) leans more toward biological communities, populations and energy flow.

Biology Molecular (Biology-M) - Geared toward biochemistry, cellular structure and processes, such as respiration and photosynthesis

AP Biology

Chemistry

Ready to show colleges what you’re made of? If you’re interested in studying science or engineering in college, taking the Chemistry Subject Test can help you demonstrate your interests and showcase your strengths in the subject.

College Board Portal for SAT Chemistry

The Chemistry Subject Test assesses your understanding of the major concepts of chemistry and your ability to apply these principles to solve specific problems.

Honors Chemistry or AP Chemistry

Physics

Looking for a way to showcase your achievements in Physics? If you’re thinking about pursuing a math- or science-based program of study (such as science, technology, engineering or math), taking the Physics Subject Test is a great way to demonstrate your talents interest on your college application.

College Board Portal for SAT Physics

The Physics Subject Test assesses your understanding of concepts from one year of introductory physics on the college-preparatory level, as well as reasoning and problem-solving skills derived from lab experience.

CP Physics*

*The College Board decided to split the AP Physics course in 2014.  The AP Testing was also split to reflect this change.  At this time, the College Board has NOT altered the Physics SAT Subject Area Test to reflect this change.  You should discuss Physics course offerings with your guidance counselor to determine the best course for your future plans at the college level.
